Magefesa Mageplus Stainless Steel 4.2 Quart Super Fast Pressure Cooker Review

Magefesa Mageplus Stainless Steel 4.2 Quart Super Fast Pressure Cooker

After doing some research, this brand name came up as a recommendation and after seeing this discounted price I had to go for it.
What I like about it:
Aluminum core base for even heat distribution.
Made in Spain, not China
Brushed stainless steel interior, no toxic non-stick coatings
Everything feels very sturdy and well-made
2 pressure settings, multiple safety release valves.
In fact I liked it so much after using it the first time, I'm buying a 2nd one for multiple course cooking.

S-9891 pressure cooker gasket seal, fits Mirro. Review

S-9891 pressure cooker gasket seal, fits Mirro.

i also ordered this gasket and it was the correct model for my cooker.
The first time I used it, it would not hold the pressure. I then carefully pressed the gasket into the lid, making sure that it was not me inserting it incorrectly. This time it held pressure for about 5 minutes and then blew out.
Called several companies that sell mirro gaskets. They all had the same model. I think that the old gasket I had for years was a little wider and fit in the rim better. I am now using my old gasket, hope it holds out a little longer.

12/15/10 re Manttra 8 quart Ss pressure cooker
I bought this pressure cooker about 2 weeks ago. I used it one time and when I went to wash it I noticed that there was a double metal plate on the bottom. (NOT a solid bottom) Unfortunately on mine this double 'plate' was separating just a fraction (about 1/8 of an inch) on one side only. I knew this couldnt' be good as with cooking and the heat constantly on the bottom, the plate would continue to separate over time. So I returned it to amazon. Hope they take it back.
Just a heads up. Now I am looking at Presto as they seem to have a solid bottom on their cookers.
This Manttra was made in China. Probably they all are but I do not like the design of a second plate on the bottom of the pot. Check yours when you get it.

I purchased the pressure cooker several month ago. I love it but manytimes I wanted have a normal lid. I did not know it is available until my friend told me. It was very good price too.
I am very glad amazon carries all the lids and sealing rubber parts. Now, I use as normal pot with this lid and pressure cooker which is great. Only thing I wished that the finish of the rim of lid would more smooth.
Well, overall I am very happy wiht it.

Fagor Home Canning Kit Review

Fagor Home Canning Kit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been canning for over 30 years and have canned several thousand jars of vegetables and fruit. We fed our family primarily from the garden and orchard of our 2.5 Ac. farmette. I have used Mirro, Presto, All American and Fagor equipment. All have their pros and cons. You can use pressure cookers to can. The problem is that at 15lbs psi (at sea level) your string beans will be better for the local nursing home residents than 3 bean salad. Of course if you live in the Pyrennees (Fagor is made in Spain) or an altitude calling for 15lbs to get 240 deg. that's what you want. The 10 qt duo pressure has a fixed choice of 8lbs (not 10) or 15. 8lbs only gets you to 234.4 degrees (unless you live in Death Valley or the Dead Sea area). The bacterium which secretes the botulin toxin is killed at 240 according to the USDA. You also need the high temp to kill certain enzymes in certain foods like creamed corn which everybody with a freezer freezes today instead. But I have not had a problem with the string beans at 8 lbs. As for the tomato/onions/bell pepper/garlic/basil mix, my wife starts cooking this in the afternoon so all the bacteria is dead by the time I come home. I can it by boiling water bath (have canned over 1,000 qts.) to kill the airborne yeast in the headspace. Fagor makes quality products, even though the people writing the instructions have never canned in their life. This kit fits the 10 qt. unit. If canning is new, ask around at church or a retirement group for help. It's more fun and easier to learn that way. -Canner from Lancaster Co., PA

Stainless Steel Rice Cooker Model ME81 (Formerly ME8) - by Miracle Exclusives Review

Stainless Steel Rice Cooker Model ME81 (Formerly ME8) - by Miracle Exclusives
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We cook rice and grains frequently, as do many Asian-Americans. We have used plastic-bowl microwave vessels, aluminum & teflon pots, steam pressure cookers and several others over the past five plus decades. They all work, but each has a down side. For instance wait till your visitors or grand kids hear the hissing monster of a pressure cooker.

We feared aluminum toxicity, teflon ingestion, plastic leaching and plain uncertainty of what new epidemiologic research will unleash on us tomorrow. My wife and I have conveniently labeled our failing intellects as chronic "rice-in" toxicity. Forget age, it must be all that peeling cooking pot and rice!
The stainless steel Miracle is a reasonable answer, unless we find out in some distant future that stainless steel is also a hazard. Probably not. This cooker performs well and passes muster readily with us. We have not noted any spills or crusty rice paste sticking to the bottom. We do have the advantage of having cooked rice and grains for many years. But this is an easy skill to acquire if you learn to vary the amount of water used to suit the type of rice or grain. Don't lose heart too soon.
The pot washes easily if you soak it in water for a few hours -- and better still leave it overnight for your spouse to take care of tomorrow!
A vege tray comes with the cooker. It steams beans, peas and carrots well and to a ready-to-eat tender state.
I agree that a price of some $50.00 would have been better, but the convenience and safety are worth the added whimper while you pay the price. You could shop around and may be able to find a slightly lower price. And don't blow the savings on pricey coffee.

Probably most people don't use a pressure cooker these days, but since my mother always used one, I do, too. I have one of the "old" ones, and I love it! Have had to replace the gasket a number of times, and one used to be able to go to the neighborhood hardware store to pick one up. No more ... so I was so glad to find this available on Amazon!

Nordic Ware Microwave Rice Cooker 8 Cup Review

Nordic Ware Microwave Rice Cooker 8 Cup
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After trying & returning several microwave rice cookers I decided to give this one a try because of the great price and Nordic Ware's reputation. You MUST follow Nordic Wares instructions for cooking rice. Using any other recipes/directions, will result in your rice being soggy & the water not absorbing. The one noticible difference between the other cookers I tried and this one is that I didn't have to clean my microwave after using this rice cooker. NO SPILLS & OVERFLOWS! I just ordered a second cooker to place in storage just in case this model is discontinued. GREAT PRODUCT AT A GREAT PRICE!

Manttra 39001 Chef-Xpress 8-Quart Stainless Steel Electric Multi-Cooker Review

Manttra 39001 Chef-Xpress 8-Quart Stainless Steel Electric Multi-Cooker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I tried two of these ... returned the first due to a screw head from bottom heating element protruding not slightly ... but enough to crease the bottom of the stainless steel pot. Felt this could be a problem in the future for a pot that undergoes pressure. Also, this unit would not seal. Top did not fit bottom of pan, regardless of gasket.
Second unit I tried would, also, not even come close to sealing. Top turned too far and had to stand there and apply pressure to get my meal done. Luckily, could return this one also. Done with this model!!!

Magefesa Mageplus Stainless Steel 8.5 Quart Super Fast Pressure Cooker Review

Magefesa Mageplus Stainless Steel 8.5 Quart Super Fast Pressure Cooker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've had this pressure cooker (my first) since late March 2010, and have used it about 5 times each week as I learned to use it.
Overall, I'm very pleased with the product, as well as with the customer service from the company, and would recommend this model to anyone looking to reduce cooking time anywhere or to improve cooking at high altitude (we live at over 8,000 ft).
Pros:
1. Well made, sturdy
2. Easy to use (and, yes, the instruction manual is in English)
3. Reliable (I've used it heavily for a month with no issues)
4. Attractive
Heads up! (neither pro nor con):
1. The bottom of the pot, while sturdy, seems thinner than my other pots. You must be careful when bringing the pot up to pressure to not use a high-output gas burner or a range setting higher than "medium-high". In fairness to this product, Miss Vickie's Big Book of Pressure Cooker Recipes, which I highly recommend, makes it clear that you must follow these instructions with any pressure cooker; failure to do so can lead to a thin or not so thin layer of burnt food on the bottom - which does wash up easily).
Cons:
1. It takes a little effort to find a replacement gasket. Note that the original gasket is still just fine, but a recommendation from two different books I read regarding pressure cookers (Miss Vickie's and the Pressure Cookers for Dummies) suggest that having a spare on hand is a good idea - you can't use the pressure cooker without one, and they will eventually wear out).
You can buy a spare gasket directly from the Magefesa USA web site. The MagePlus and "Ideal" pressure cookers have several parts in common, including the gasket. Go to the magefesausa website and click on "Parts and accessories", and then you can select the model Ideal" and then select the silicon gasket (or just go to [...]).
MagefesaUSA's customer service was quick to answer my question about gaskets, which is a Pro for this item.
Finally, regarding the description:
It used to be that Amazon allowed purchasers to recommend changes to descriptions of items in their catalog. Apparently, they don't do this anymore. If they did, I would change:
"3 cooking levels: traditional slow cooking: max 6 psi, fast cooking: max 9 psi, super fast cooking: max 15 psi. Silent and air tight."
to:
"2 cooking levels: fast cooking: max 9 psi, super fast cooking: max 15 psi. Silent and air tight."
There seems to be a problem with the description of this and at least one other Magefesa pressure cooker in that they are described as having three (3) pressures available, when in fact they only have two (9 & 15 PSI). I don't consider this a drawback in any way (I'm new to pressure cooking, but the two books I read said nothing about cooking at other than 15 PSI). It is confusing, however, when you get the unit and initially try to figure out how to get 6 PSI. Don't bother (and don't worry, who needs it?).
Overall, I'd rate this product a conservative 4 stars. After I've used it a few more months, assuming it continues to have no problems and the gasket remains in good shape, I'll likely raise it to 5 stars. (I would have given it an immediate 5 stars if it had been easier to find the gasket).

HAWKINS STAINLESS STEEL 4 LITERS PRESSURE COOKER Review

HAWKINS STAINLESS STEEL 4 LITERS PRESSURE COOKER
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought one of these after seeing a friend use his all the time. He grew up in India, where these cookers are made. I researched the sizes and got the 4-liter one even though I thought it would be one too large for most of my needs. (The smaller ones are aluminum). The stainless one has a very heavy bottom, which makes it great to fry onions and tomatoes up before adding other ingredients and putting on the pressure. Also it makes a great heavy stainless pot even if you do not need to pressure cook. It ended up to be a great size for making soup, stews and meals for two to four (depending on meal). You cannot fill these cookers to the top, so get a bigger size than you would in other pots. The pressure cooker is such a great way to cook beans and rice dishes fast. Very economical in saving fuel and energy, and the results are great. There is an Indian cookbook and instructions included in case you have not used one before.

I keep having to replace the rings every 6 months because they shrink and then they don't do their job. I have a Presto canner and if there was a better ring that fits (which I don't think there is) I would get it. My friend has a Mirro canner and she used it for 15 years and never had to replace the ring. I wish the Mirro ring fit into my Presto canner, but it doesn't.
