Functions as claims. Non-Stick is excellent. 50 year warranty and durability are issues to be determined. Only used handful of times. Wisconsin Aluminum Foundry but MADE IN CHINA. Origination should be in description and let the buyer decide if he will support lowering wage standards in this country!

Back to Basics Jar Lifter Review

Back to Basics Jar Lifter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I looked for ages in my city (Tucson, AZ - not a small town!) trying to find one of these. I guess I live in a place where people just don't can anymore because it was nearly impossible to find one. Amazon to the rescue! This jar lifter does what it says - it lifts jars out of boiling water baths and keeps you from getting burned. The hand grips are nice, the section that wraps around the jar are nice and soft to prevent breaking the jars when you lift them, and the tongs are long enough to keep your hands sufficiently far from the water. My only problem with this product is I have short fingers and it's hard to grab the jars with one hand since the tongs have to open so far to fit around the jars. I just use my other hand and it isn't really a problem. Besides, this is something that is common to all jar lifters as opposed to just this one. If you're into canning and need supplies, this jar lifter will do the trick. It's not fancy and it's not expensive, but it does the job.

Fagor 670040240 110-Volt Portable Induction Cooktop Review

Fagor 670040240 110-Volt Portable Induction Cooktop
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This was my first experience with induction cooking, and, like everyone else says, it's fantastic. Keeps the kitchen cool, heats things faster, offers precise control, environmental, easy to clean - all good stuff.
But I'm going to try a different brand next time I buy an induction cooktop. Here's why:
1) There are only six heat settings. I've found that to simmer many items, I need a setting in between 2 and 3. So I have to stand over it and manually switch between the two.
2) It appears to cycle on and off (at least on setting 3). A pot of stuff will bubble for a while, then stop, then bubble for a while, etc. I don't know if this is normal for an induction cooktop, but obviously it isn't very smooth.
3) The controls are indeed difficult to get used to, though it can be done. You need to give them a rather sharp tap, instead of just pressing them. There's also a delay, so if you want to turn the heat down from 6 to 1, you have to tap at certain intervals.
4) It seems to produce a hot spot in the center of the pan. That part will bubble when the edges stay cooler. I don't know if this is normal with induction cooking. I use All-Clad pans.
All told, these negatives don't outweigh the positive experience of using an induction cooktop. But I'll try another brand next time. And there will be a next time, because compared to my lousy electric stove, induction cooking is wonderful!

Sleek and efficient, this induction-powered cooktop brings the comfort and health benefits of home-cooked foods to the office, dorm room, cabin, or anywhere in need of a portable heat source. The 110-volt appliance features a large burner and six adjustable power levels, with a temperature capacity that ranges from 190 to 430 degrees F--perfect for everything from gently soft-boiled eggs to hearty soups, stews, and more. Convenient to transport and simple to use, the energy-efficient unit heats instantly when needed, while the surface around the pot remains cool to the touch. For added safety, the cooktop's auto-pan detection sensor automatically shuts the unit off after 60 seconds if no cookware is detected to prevent scorching, heat-related injury, and power waste. Even more, the cooktop provides a digital 180-minute countdown timer that aids in properly cooking all dishes, reducing the risks of overcooking. Additional highlights include an easy-to-clean glass surface, a touch control panel with a digital display, a child safety-lock system, a low- and high-voltage warning system, and a diagnostic error message system for simple troubleshooting. The cooktop works with all induction-ready cookware, such as cast aluminum, enameled iron and steel, stainless steel with a magnetic bottom, and cast iron (all Fagor pressure cookers and cookware are induction compatible). The UL-approved induction cooktop measures 14 by 12 by 2-1/2 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty.

Fissler CookStar Induction Pro Portable Cooktop Review

Fissler CookStar Induction Pro Portable Cooktop
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been using my Fissler Cooktop for about a year now. Clean-up is easy - it took me a while to master the settings to avoid boil-overs. It's all good now.
Let me back-up a moment and describe this unit. This is a self contained counter top cooking device. It plugs into a standard wall outlet and requires the type of cookware that a magnet would stick to the base. This requirement rules out copper and aluminum bottoms. I believe iron may be used, but I am not totally sure.
The device uses inductive power to induce heat into the pan, not by a traditional heating element. Part of the advantage of this is when the unit is shut off after use it has no heat of it's own. When the cook surface warms up, it is from heat induced in the pan sitting on top. This unit will not operate or create any heat without a steel bottom pan sitting on top. This is a nice feature if you live in a hot climate (like me in Phoenix). The range in my apartment (Whirlpool) has a black glass top with with what looks like rings of red LED's below the glass to heat pans. This large range takes forever to boil water and stays hot for almost an hour after shut off. Compare to the Fissler unit that boils water fast and does not retain any heat when shut off. With this Fissler cooktop I can make spaghetti in less time than my whirlpool range can even begin to show visual signs of warming in the same pan of water.
The controls are all touch spots on the top near the front. To operate you need to enter an intensity number (1-9) and a countdown duration in hrs:mins. Touching the spots to enter the settings is slow, the unit cannot accept rapid touching, a measured pace must be used - perhaps one touch per second. I believe the unit starts to operate before all the settings are entered, which is a nice feature. There is also a quiet internal fan that starts once the power button is touched. You can change the intensity setting while running. If you wanted to enter a large cooking time number you press and hold down the up button and the numbers rapidly scroll upwards. There are other button features not covered in this review. I suspect it may be a bit fragile, as it came packed in a box in a box in a box. I doubt it would survive a quick trip from counter to floor. It appears to be designed so boil-overs will not penetrate the unit and destroy the electronics. It is not dishwasher safe, cleans up with almost anything.
This cooktop is larger than it appears in photos. Three inches tall, 14 inches front to back and 11 inches wide.
Pros: fast, economical, good looking, no residual heat when shut off, count down timer, easy to clean, short burst booster mode.
Cons: slow button input, easy to boil over, don't leave anything sensitive to magnetic fields nearby (credit cards, cellphone, TV, prosthetic arm or hand, etc), pan must stay on the unit when cooking or it shuts off.
Would I buy it again? Yes! There's two reason for not giving it five stars; too expensive, and button entry is slow and frustrating at times.
UPDATE: been using this for a while longer now. Boil-overs are rare for me now and I am still amazed at how fast it is compared to my whirlpool range, which hasn't been used since this arrived. With this unit I can have a bowl of spaghetti cooked and on the table before my range would even have tiny bubbles show, using the same sauce pan and same amount of water.

I PURCHASED THIS ITEM IN HOPES THAT IT COULD BE A SUBSTITUTE FOR A BATTERY FLASHLIGHT. MAXIMO COMPACT REQUIRES CONSTANT REVOLVING THE HANDLE TO MAINTAIN THE LIGHT SO THAT BOTH HANDS ARE NEEDED, ONE HOLD THE OTHER TO REVOLVE THE RECHARGING HANDLE. EVERY MORNING I GO OUT IN THE DARK TO GET MY AND MY NEIGHBOR'S PAPER. THERE'S NO WAY I CAN CARRY A PAPER AND USE BOTH HANDS TO OPERATE THE MAXIMO.THUS THE MAXIMO STAYS ON THE SHELF FOR EMERGENCIES,AND I USE A FLASHLIGHT WITH BATTERIES FOR ALL OTHER PURPOSES.

Black & Decker RC3303 3-Cup Rice Cooker Review

Black and Decker RC3303 3-Cup Rice Cooker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Ever since I purchased this item, I've been using it almost every single day! It is extremely convenient and is a snap to use. I live in a small apartment and this is the perfect size for one person. I always cook 1 cup of uncooked rice and it is a hearty serving for one person. It is very easy to measure all your ingredients because the non-stick bowl has marked lines on the inside (1 cup, 2 cup, and 3 cup) to show you how much water to add. Clean-up is a breeze because of the non-stick bowl.
My favorite rice to make is jasmine rice with lots of lime juice, a little lemon juice, and cilantro. I add the rice to the non-stick bowl (1 cup uncooked). Then I add enough lime juice so that all of the rice is wet and soaking in it. Then I add just a little bit of lemon juice (1-2 tsp.). Then add a bit of butter and some salt. After rice is cooked, mix in 2 tsp. of cilantro and stir well. It's delicious and it's the only rice I ever make.
The only problem with this unit is that you have to check the rice occasionally during the cooking phase, otherwise the bottom of the rice will brown. It's not a catastrophe and is easily remedied. First off, let me just say that if the rice browns a bit, it only looks unpleasant. It still tastes just as good. To avoid this, you need to wait until the rice has absorbed almost all the water. Take off the lid and stir the rice thoroughly. Once the rice has absorbed most of the water, just switch the mode to "keep warm" manually (instead of waiting for it to click). Then occasionally stir the rice while you wait around 5-10 minutes (give or take). Once the rice has absorbed all the water, you can leave it on "keep warm". I like to switch the mode back to "cook" for around 3-4 minutes so that the rice gets nice and hot. The trick is to take it out before it browns the bottom. This sounds complicated, but it really is not. Just check it occasionally, stir it a few times, then switch it to "keep warm" just before all the water is absorbed (95% or so should be absorbed). This is the only flaw with this unit (hence only 4 stars). Otherwise, I think it is fantastic and it is my new favorite kitchen appliance!

Take the guesswork out of making restaurant-quality rice at home with this easy-to-use rice cooker. The handy appliance offers a 3-cup rice capacity--great for one or two people or when making a side dish. Simply add dry rice, measure in the water, and turn the unit on with a press of the lever. Once the rice has cooked, the appliance automatically switches over to "keep warm" mode, which maintains an ideal serving temperature without over-cooking. In addition, the unit's removable nonstick pot ensures effortless food release and quick cleanup. Other highlights include "cook" and "keep warm" indicator lights, stay-cool handles, four stable feet, and a tempered-glass lid with a steam vent. A measuring cup and a serving scoop come included. The rice cooker measures approximately 7-1/2 by 7-1/2 by 6-3/5 inches.

West Bend 84396 6-Quart Oval Electronic Crockery Cooker, Stainless Steel Review

West Bend 84396 6-Quart Oval Electronic Crockery Cooker, Stainless Steel
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this slow cooker almost a year ago and have been very happy with it. I spent a good couple of weeks looking over reviews and asking family and friends for recommendations before I invested in a slow cooker - I wanted one that would last and I didn't need all of the fancy features that a lot of the newer models are offering.
This West Bend is easy to use, easy to clean, and (after almost a year) I've had no problems to speak of. The stainless steel look is great, the ceramic insert is nice and heavy, and the lid fits snugly. It does have a timer feature - which you can only set by the hour - which I would say is the only down side. There is a definite difference between the low and high heat settings. Personally I cook most things on low (it is a SLOW cooker), I only switch to high when I'm in a hurry or need to thicken up a stew or stroganoff. I've tried cooking a number of different things in this slow cooker and everything always comes out great!
It was definitely worth looking around and reading reviews on other appliances before I settled on this one. The price was right and it works wonderfully. I don't own any other West Bend products (I'm usually a KitchenAid girl) but this was definitely a good choice.
Highly recommend it!

Coleman Two-Burner Propane Stove Review

Coleman Two-Burner Propane Stove
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have owned and loved a 5430C Coleman 2 burner propane stove for 6 years and recently ordered, directly from Coleman, another 5430, now produced in the F model, so that I could have a total of 4 burners on matching stoves. The first hint I had that the F model was deserving of the "F" designation was when I reached in the box and slightly cut my finger on the base which had not been properly fastened and tucked inside the lip of the top during manufacture. My first thought was that it had been damaged in shipping but there were no marks on the box and no dents in the thin sheet metal. Unlike the older model C which had rolled steel edges, sturdy hinges, and a positive locking latch, the model F has rough edges with abrasive burrs that remained exposed even after I disassembled it and put it back together with the base tucked into the top as it was designed. The lid has a piece of plastic that serves as a latch by snapping into a cutout on the top but it did not even make contact with the lip of the cutout. Using my fingers I warped the lid enough to get it to fit but when carrying the stove by the roughly cut hole that serves as a handle the lid pops open. I will say the burners work well but the construction is cheap, poorly assembled, and is a first aid event waiting to happen. The sad part is the printing on the box which says "MADE IN USA". As an Eagle scout, former assistant scoutmaster, avid RVer, and owner of various Coleman cooking and lighting appliances dating from WWII to the present, I am disappointed in a brand whose name has always been right there with apple pie, hot dogs, and the 4th of July. I can't say I won't buy Coleman in the future but I will, without a doubt, compare other brands for quality regardless of their country of origin. Wake up Coleman and spend a few more cents per unit to rebuild your reputation for quality. Your grade on this one is an "F"

Long the authority on propane camping stoves, Coleman steps up to the plate again with its two-burner PerfectFlow stove. Coleman's PerfectFlow appliances regulate the pressure of the propane to provide a consistent cooking performance without flaring or flickering. This steady fuel stream holds true even in cold weather, high altitudes, or when the fuel is low.The stove is equipped with two 10,000 BTU burners, with independently adjustable flames that let you boil water on high (in a mere 4-1/2 minutes) while you simmer chili on low. The fuel is long lasting as well: with just a single propane fuel cylinder (sold separately), you can use both burners on high for up to an hour--more than enough time to prepare a weekend's worth of meals. Plus, the stove includes Coleman's Windblock side panels, which not only shields the burners for maximum heat, but also adjusts outward to accommodate larger pot sizes. Propane stoves are perfect for almost any social outdoor activity, including camping, hunting, tailgating, and backyard cookouts. The PerfectFlow stove measures 23.25 by 5.5 by 14.75 inches (W x H x D) when closed and carries a three-year warranty.
About Coleman More than 100 years ago, a young man with an entrepreneurial spirit and a better idea began manufacturing lanterns in Wichita, Kansas. His name was W.C. Coleman, and the company he founded would change life in America. A man plagued with such poor vision he sometimes had to ask classmates to read aloud to him, Coleman saw a brilliant light in 1900 in a drugstore window that stopped him in his tracks. He inquired about the light inside and discovered he was able to read even the small print on a medicine bottle by the illumination. The lamps had mantles, not wicks, and were fueled by gasoline under pressure instead of coal oil. Soon afterward, Coleman started a lighting service that offered a "no light, no pay" clause--a big step forward for merchants who were burned by inferior products that rarely worked--and drew substantial interest from businesses that wanted to keep their lights on after dark.
In the ensuing years, Coleman expanded its product line well beyond lanterns. The company's current catalog is thick with products that make spending time outdoors a pleasure. There are coolers that keep food and drinks cold for days on end, comfortable airbeds that won't deflate during the night, a complete line of LED lights that last for years, powerful portable grills that cook with an authentic open-grill flame, and much, much more. Coleman has truly fashioned much of our outdoor camping experience, and expects to do so for generations to come.

The Pragotrade Large Nonstick Oven Liner was a purchase I made to treat myself. Yes, I have a self-cleaning oven, so it only took a couple of days to clean it. That was something I do not want to go through again, so as a treat to myself, I purchased this product and I couldn't be happier. It looks good, works great, I don't plan to ever have to run the self-cleaning cycle and the horrid manual cleanup that I did last time!

7.5 (30 Qt) Gallon Stainless Steel Stock Pot with Lid Review

7.5 (30 Qt) Gallon Stainless Steel Stock Pot with Lid
Average Reviews:

It's a good size and shape for home brewing, but not a very heavy gauge steel. It weighs about 6 lbs. and has a "brushed" finish like you see in a stainless steel sink as opposed to shiny like silverware. The dimensions in the product description are inaccurate; it's approx. 13.5" wide x 13" tall (not counting the lid).
If you're looking to economize, this is a good choice. I'm sure it will work fine. If you can spare a little more, I'd go with something heavier gauge.

I received this as a gift, and was looking forward to cooking up lots of pancakes or french toast at once. However, because of the design of the grease/juice wells on two corners, the griddle will not sit evenly on my gas range. I tried various positions, but gave up. If your range has square racks, avoid this.
One more thing - after relatively few uses, and only using wooden spatulas, the "nonstick" surface began to wear and foods started sticking badly.

I made apricot juice with this and plum juice. the whole house smelledf wonderful while doing it, plus it saves a lot of time from the old "boil and strain" method.
